Grading
Policy
Your overall 18-week final grade will be calculated by dividing the points you earn by the total possible points.
Section Tests = 100 points
Lab Tests = 100
points
[Lab tests will be taken every 4 ½ weeks and cover the labs completed to that point. There will be a practical lab section on each lab test as well as a
written section.]
Quizzes = 20-50
points
Homework =
varies
[Homework will be collected with each section and the possible points vary
with the section. Students will have a homework sheet in their notebook for each section showing all homework assignments.]
Lab Safety Rules
1.
You are not to perform unauthorized experiments in lab.
2.
The chemical reagents used are in bottles with labels showing the chemical and
the concentration. Read the label
carefully before removing the material because serious accidents can occur if
the wrong chemical is used. Do not
take the reagent bottle to your lab table.
Never return unused material to the reagent bottle.
3.
When heating or carrying out a reaction in a test tube, never point the tube at
your neighbor or yourself.
4.
Never taste a chemical unless directed to do so, as many reagents are poisonous
when taken internally. DUE TO THE
TOXIC NATURE OF THE CHEMICALS USED IN LAB, THERE WILL BE ABSOLUTELY NO EATING OR
DRINKING IN THE LAB OR CLASSROOM AREA.
When directed to smell vapors, do so by gently fanning the vapors toward
your face.
5.
If you receive a chemical burn, immediately flush the burned area with a large
amount of water. Tell the teacher
at once. REPORT ALL ACCIDENTS, NO
MATTER HOW SLIGHT, TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATELY.
6.
Safety goggles must be worn at all times during the lab period. Glasses are not an acceptable
substitute.
7.
Anyone engaging in deliberate unsafe acts will be taken out of the lab and will
receive a zero.
8.
All students in chem labs must wear a lab apron.
